The book From Pearl Harbor to Calvary is the testimony of Mitsuo Fuchido. For those of you who are not familiar with your World War II history, Fuchido was a Captain in the Imperial Japanese Air Service and was responsible for leading the attack on Pearl Harbor. After the war ended Fuchido found Christ and dedicated his life to serving Him.
Since I am a history buff, I was excited about the opportunity to read more about this man’s life. However, this book left me feeling a little short, not really knowing the man any more than I did before I read the book. This short audio book leads you from the bombing of Pearl Harbor to Fuchido joining an American missionary organization aimed at bringing Christ to Japan. A large portion of the book is dedicated to the correspondence between Fuchido and the American organization as they enlist Fuchido for their cause. The book does cut off abruptly after his appointment, and the reader is left with more questions concerning this soldier for Christ’s life and work.
The narrator did an acceptable job with the work, but I never did lose the feeling that someone was reading to me. I much prefer audio books, where you can get lost in the story and characters and forget that you are being read a book. The entire book had the feeling that the narrator was reading a letter out loud.
The audio book from christianaudio.com does include bonus interviews at the end, which I found the most enjoyable part of the work. The interviews with Florence and Jacob DeShazer were informative, although they were difficult to hear at times.
Overall, the life of Mitsuo Fuchido has the potential to be a very interesting and enlightening story, but I feel that this book did not quite do justice to the story of this man who put on the armor of God and stopped fighting for Japan to fight for Christ.
