“Till death do us part.” Today these words may seem to many like so many other words strung together to make a sentence. To some these words have about the same commitment as, “Would you go to dinner with me?” But according to the Worldwide Marriage Encounter, a faith-based marriage enrichment program, there are some that do take these vows seriously. In an effort to give young couples something to strive for, they have recently named Wilbur & Theresa Faiss of Las Vegas as the longest married couple in the United States.
On April 14, 1933 the Faiss’ made that vow to each other and they have been living that vow for the last 78 years. Mr Faiss tells that they met at a roller skating rink 3 years earlier and it was “love at first sight.” Herbert Hoover was the President of the United States when Wilbur and Theresa tied the knot. And as a married couple they have witnessed 14 different men hold the highest office in our country. In 1933 a newly married couple could rent a house for about $18 a month, or if they decided to purchase instead, $6,000 would purchase a new house and leave them some money left over to buy the furniture. This couple has survived World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, a Cold War, a War on Drugs, and a War on Terror.
But somehow throughout the years peace has reigned supreme at the Faiss household and they have withstood all of the trials and troubles that mankind could throw at a couple. Their love for each other has sustained them throughout the years and they have set the standard for which the rest of us should try to achieve. I don’t know their religious affiliation, however, I do know that this marriage is obviously one that has been blessed by God.
I love being married to my wife and I can’t believe that she has put up with me for the past 25 years. I know that our love for each other along with a faith and reliance on God has allowed our marriage to grow and strengthen over the years. So I know that the bond that these two people have after 78 years is amazing. I can only hope to achieve similar success in my own marriage.
Wilbur and Theresa Faiss are an inspiration to all married couples around the country. I congratulate them on this achievement and I pray that God will continue to bless their marriage.
Note: When I first started writing this article, I did not know anything about this couple, other than their achievement in their marriage. However, a quick search turned up Wilbur and Theresa Faiss Middle School in Las Vegas, NV. The fact that the school is named for both of them is a tribute to their marriage. If you would like to read more about this amazing couple and their achievements, visit the Wilbur & Theresa Faiss Middle School website here.
