I first heard of Our Hearts Hero last year when they were giving away their Christmas album. I’m not a big fan of Christmas albums but I fell in love with the unique sound of this album. (You can read that original review here.) So I was intrigued when Our Hearts Hero announced that they were releasing a new album. We featured the video from the title cut “Shine On” here a couple of weeks ago and as soon as the album was released this past week I purchased it.
I must admit that even though I really liked the Christmas album, I wasn’t expecting to be overwhelmed by this sophomore release from the band. I figured that I was probably getting a little too old to appreciate their sound and I purchased the album mainly because I enjoyed their Christmas album which I did not have to pay for, so I thought that this would be a good way to support the band in their ministry. I was wrong. I am blown away by this album.
“Shine On” is full of surprises, I was expecting the classical sound blended with a modern edge that I found on the Christmas album but was afraid that everything would sound too electric or too new wave for my taste. I was wrong. There is a great blend of electric, acoustic, and classic sounds that just works. Each song is a new experience and the music is fresh, never sounding old or tired. Too many bands these days get in a musical rut and all of their music ends up sounding the same. This is not the case with Our Hearts Hero.
The music is outstanding on the album, with strong drum tracks that make you want to stomp your feet or pump your fist in the air. But what really grabbed me with this album was the lyrics. The lyrics are clear, concise, and promote the Gospel. The songs do a great job of evoking emotions and getting you involved in the music.
There is something on this album for everyone. I have listened to the entire album approximately 5 times in the past 24 hours preparing for this article and I grow to love the music more and more each time I listen. From ”Echo” with its great electric sound and great message, to perhaps my favorite, “Prayer.” This song touched my heart the first time I heard it. The words will resonate with just about anyone.
When you pray, it’s not about the words you say. Not about the time and place. It’s a seeking heart. A first step of faith.
But the biggest surprise to me of the entire album is “Forever and Forevermore.” This is a true worship song. I was not expecting this when I purchased the album and was blown away by this song. This is the type of song that makes you want to stand up and raise your hands to the heavens and thank God for all that He has done for us.
Grace will fall like rain on the broken and afraid. And love will set them free.
The surprises go all the way to the end of this album. The final track on the album ‘The Orphans” is a hauntingly beautiful song that will leave you thinking. This song will trigger your emotions and your mind, leaving you thinking about your place in this world and your dependence on Jesus Christ. What a great way to end this album.
I could go on and on about this album, however, I think it is sufficient enough to say that if something happened and I lost my copy that I just purchased, I would immediately purchase the album again. It is that good!
This sophomore album by Our Hearts Hero shows that this band is dedicated to spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ through their music. They are using their talents to further His kingdom in an extraordinary way. The result is an album that is truly a blessing. I know that God is going to bless the work that Our Hearts Hero is doing and that this album is going to touch people in ways that they never would have imagined.
