A Time of No Time

I have always heard it said, “Time flies when you are having fun.”  Well this certainly must be the case because one of my favorite things in the world is the rare opportunity to take an afternoon nap.  And when I am participating in this ritual, time certainly does fly.  But if time flies when you are enjoying yourself, then the opposite must be true as well.  ”Time slows to a crawl when you are not having fun.”

This, itself, is reason enough to try to have fun in everything that you do, but unfortunately, this is not always possible.  There are times throughout our lives when time seems to slow to a crawl.

Just ask any 7-year-old on Christmas Eve and they will surely tell you that the next morning will never arrive.  And this phenomena does not stop when you grow older either.  Just check in with me the last day of work before vacation starts or ask me on one of the days at work when we are not busy and I am looking for work to keep me busy.  Time slows to a crawl, the minutes creep along and it seems as if the day will never end.

Even though time can be measured specifically, the perception of time seems to be subjective.  In general time seems to move faster and faster as we age.  For a parent looking at your children grow and age it doesn’t seem possible that so many years have passed in such a short period of time.  We can look back at past events that occurred decades ago, but to us it seems like yesterday.

Fortunately for us, there will be a “time” when “time” will no longer matter.  Minutes, hours, days will just meld together and will hold no meaning to us.

22 And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. 23 And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24 By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, 25 and its gates will never be shut by day – and there will be no night there. 26 They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. 27 But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.  Revelation 21:22-27 ESV

No sun nor moon will be needed.  No day nor night will exist.  The glory of God will illuminate everything permanently, making time nonexistent.

One thing is for sure, if time did exist I am sure that it would fly by.  Because as we all know; “Time flies when you are having fun.”

Do you ever have days when it seems that time is standing still?

  1. Thee are days that I go into the work and the next thing I know, it’s lunch time. Then it seems like the afternoon crawls. It’s crazy. Looking forward to time not mattering anymore.

  2. I hate it when things are so slow that time seems to stand still. My wife works at the local BMV and I will ask her how her day went. She says, "Busy." I answer, "That is better than being bored." I am the first to like some down time, but too much is maddening.

  3. I only wish that time would come to a crawl. Seeing my mom going downhill makes me long for the younger days. Seeing my gray hairs going white makes me cry for them. lol

    • There certainly are times when it would be nice for it to crawl. Spending time with loved ones, vacation days, and my favorite NAP TIME comes to mind.
