Happy Happy Happy

May 9, 2013 — 5 Comments

Happy Happy HappyHappy Happy Happy. When you hear this phrase do you think of a hippie love fest? Or is the image in your mind one of camouflage and beards? If you answered the latter, then you certainly have watched the hit television show on the A&E Network, Duck Dynasty.

If you have never seen or heard of the show, then your tv must be broke, Duck Dynasty is a show about the Robertson family. The show chronicles the lives and misadventures of these self-proclaimed rednecks as they hunt, fish, and make the duck calls that have made them not only famous but also rich. The patriarch of the family is Phil Robertson, who is always quick to point out that he and his family are rich, however, those riches are not measured in dollars but instead are measured in the blessings that God has given them over the years.

Happy Happy Happy: My Life And Legacy As The Duck Commander is the biography of Phil Robertson. Fans of the television show will love this book as much as they enjoy the show. The homespun wisdom of Phil comes through on each and every page of the book. Covering all areas of his life, Robertson recounts his earliest childhood memories growing up in Louisiana right through the opportunities that he now has to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with thousands around the country due to his successful business and television show.

I Am A Church MemberOver the past couple of weeks, I have written about the newest book by Thom Rainer, I Am A Church Member. You can read my original view of the book here. To recap, this is a book that every church member should read. It has changed my view of my own church membership and has shown me that many of the problems that I have experienced in church in the past was much more of my own doing than I had ever taken credit for.

The Sunday School class that I teach at church decided that we would study this book over a six-week period, taking a look at one chapter per week. This week we looked at Chapter 2: I Will Be A Unifying Church Member.

Chapter 2 is a great chapter that explains how Christians are to love each other. This chapter of the book is where my toes started getting a little bruised in the process of learning how to be a better church member. An honest assessment of my past led me to understand that even though I may have always said that I loved my fellow church members, I have not always shown this in my actions.

I Am A Church Member

April 17, 2013 — 3 Comments

Even though I am a pretty heavy reader, there have been very few times in my life when I have picked up a book and not moved until I had read the entire work from cover to cover. However, this happened to me this past weekend when I received a pre-release copy of I Am A Church Member by Thom S. Rainer.

I Am A Church MemberIn his newest book, due to be released on May 1, 2013, the best selling author examines what the Bible says about being a member of the church. One of the problems that our churches face today is that its members join looking for a country club experience. They are looking for a place to hang out and to be served. However, the Bible clearly states that being a church member is about serving, not being served.

I must admit that when I picked up the book for the first time and read the introduction I could not help but think, “I know a lot of people that need to read this book.” It did not take me long to realize that I was wrong, I needed to read this book.

Just Like Jesus

Just Like JesusFor several weeks I have been promising you a review of Just Like Jesus, by Max Lucado. Even though I read this book relatively quickly, unlike many of the books that I review here, I decided to read through the book a second time. It is just that good. Written in Lucado’s typical down to earth style, Just Like Jesus is an inspiration for us to try to live like Jesus and to develop a heart like His.

As humans, we have a hard time understanding God’s love. We typically try to relate His love for us with our love. In his book, Lucado dispels this way of thinking. God’s love isn’t based on human love. We can not equate the love that God has for us with the love that we have for others.

God loves you just the way you are, but he refuses to leave you that way. He wants you to be just like Jesus.

This quote from early in the book caught my attention from the very beginning. Lucado takes care to explain this concept in his book in more detail.

I Still Believe

Anyone who listens to contemporary Christian music will be familiar with the name Jeremy Camp, however, not as many people will be familiar with his story. I Still Believe, a memoir, by Jeremy Camp with David Thomas is the stunning tale of the life of this musician who has dedicated to sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ through his music.

When we, as music fans, hear our favorite artist on the radio, see them on stage, or purchase their music through iTunes we seldom think of the person behind the music. We see the artist on stage pouring their heart out for God and think “wow, that must really be a great life.” However, sometimes looks can be deceiving.

In his latest update to his memoir, Camp provides his fans with a behind the scenes look at his past, a past that has not always been so grand. Coming from a family of parents that turned their backs on a life of sin to accept Jesus and to live for Him, Jeremy found Jesus at an early age. Throughout his youth he struggled with shedding his past and living a life for God.
