Let Us Pray

May 21, 2013 — Leave a comment

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of those who were affected by yesterday’s storms in Oklahoma. I grieve as I watch the news of the events that unfolded yesterday. I know that many this morning are looking for answers, looking for comfort, looking for inspiration.

Today, instead of sharing with you my thoughts, I have decided to point you to a couple of other blog posts that I have found helpful this morning.

The first post is a repost of an article written by Sammy Adebiyi after the tragedy in Newtown Ct. It is certainly applicable to us today.

2 Words That Give Me Hope In The Midst of Unspeakable Tragedy

The next post that I ask you to visit this morning is by Ron Edmondson.

How To Pray For and Respond To Oklahoma

May God bless you.

Congratulations

Claremont School of TheologyIt is rare that you receive a second post from me in a single day, however, today is a special occasion. Since beginning this blog almost two years ago, I have come to realize that my children have grown to expect a shout out on their special days. And since nothing pleases me more than putting a smile on my children’s faces, I try to oblige them whenever I can.

Usually when I write about my children, I will write about the joys and the blessings of the past, reminisce about the days gone by, and explain why my child is so special to me. It has been twenty-three years since God blessed my wife and myself with the birth of my son. He has been a joyous gift that we have cherished for each of the twenty-three years. However, today I am not going to relive the past. Today I want to speak to you about the future.

In just a few weeks, Jason will be graduating from Mount Olive College with a degree in religion. In pursuit of a career in academic theology, he has decided to continue his education and attend Claremont School of Theology in Southern California this fall. I am not sure if you have looked at a map lately but Southern California is a long way from Eastern North Carolina.

The American Bible ChallengeThe American Bible Challenge returns tonight on The Game Show Network. The game show based on the Bible which took the country by storm last year returns for its second season. This year, Kirk Franklin joins host Jeff Foxworthy as the show’s musical co-host. But that is not the only change that you will see in season two.

In addition to the 18 new teams that will be competing for the $100,000 grand prize, the American Bible Challenge has 19 new games to challenge the contestants knowledge of the Bible along with their dexterity. What makes this game show unique, other than its focus on the Bible, is their focus on charity. Each team that competes plays for their own local charity.

This year, not only are the contestants and games new, but The American Bible Challenge has joined up with several other ministries to help promote the study of God’s word. YouVersion, the online and mobile Bible application, used by millions around the world, is now the official Bible application for The American Bible Challenge. The Biblical Collection

Last month the US Postal Service announced that they were developing their own line of designer clothing to be sold to the public starting sometime next year. The new line of clothing will be named “Rain Heat & Snow” and will be sold in department stores, not post offices. This is an attempt by the Postal Service to collect royalties on the clothing line without having to invest in manufacturing. Only men’s clothing will be available at the launch but there are plans to integrate women’s apparel into the line after the launch.

While I applaud the Postal Service for trying to make some money, this entire idea sounds a little bit wacky to me. And it got me to thinking about all of the other designer clothing opportunities that exist. The idea of attaching a designer label to capture the popularity of everyday objects is a brilliant money making scheme.

So what’s more popular that the Bible. After all, it is the best selling book of all time and is published in practically every language. A designer clothing line based on the Bible will be multi-cultural and instantly recognizable around the world. I know that there are a lot of clothing lines created to spread biblical knowledge and to show your allegiance to Christ. Just walk into any Christian bookseller today and you will see almost as many t-shirts and trinkets as you do books. But I’m not talking about t-shirts, I’m talking about a full blown line of clothing based on Biblical characters. And we don’t have to limit our imaginations to just clothing, there is also a great market for accessories as well.
