The Results Are In

Several weeks ago, we discussed ChurchLink App, a new mobile application for your church or ministry. During this time, I explained that our church was introducing this mobile application to our members and that I would report back here with the results. Well, the results are in and after only two weeks the response has been incredible.

I was so impressed by the reaction of our congregation that I took the opportunity to share my experience with the people at ChurchLink earlier this week. So today, I would like to share those same thoughts here with you.

ChurchLink Facebook CoverI must admit that this has been a perfect storm of sorts but after all, isn’t that the way God works. By putting individuals and events in the same place at the right time He furthers the advancement of His Kingdom. Let me start by giving you a little background on our situation.

My church is like a number of small rural churches across America. With an attendance of about 125 people a week, many of which were born and raised in the same church, we have not been the most tech savvy congregation. We have preferred to practice our faith in the building on Sunday with an occasional outreach program every now and then. Our congregation is comprised of some of the greatest people you would ever want to meet but certainly we could be classified as an old-school southern church and technology is not high on our priority list.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Right? Well, sometimes, but when it comes to your blog, a good picture really doesn’t make up for a well written article. However, that does not mean that you should not include pictures in your blog posts. Most of the experts (of which I am not) agree that a well placed, related image will entice your readers to read your post. After all, that is what we are all trying to achieve isn’t it?

Images have always been an important part of a blog and now with the scheduled demise of Google Reader, they are becoming more important than ever before.

What does Google Reader’s death sentence have to do with images? Everything. As bloggers we have all come to rely on traffic from our RSS feeds. I have written several posts about the importance of the RSS and have explained why I love Google Reader. Like most techno-geeks, I too have relied on Google Reader for the majority of my blog reading over the past few years. I have an extensive collection of RSS feeds that I monitor constantly throughout the day looking for insightful posts, new technology, and ideas for the church in general. However, that is all about to come to an abrupt end in a few months when Google pulls the plug on their reader.

Like thousands of others around the world, I too, am in search of a new RSS feed reader. (Google will not publicly release the numbers of exactly how many people use this service, but suffice it to say that there are many.) There are actually plenty of options to choose from on your desktop, your Android, and your iOS device to replicate the experience that we are used to with the reader. However, many of these new readers are delivering content in a more polished manner much like a news magazine.

Size Does Matter

Size does matter, at least when it comes to typography and the internet.  There have been books written, studies done, and scientific research to discover the relationship between typography and readership on the internet.  But one thing is clear; if you want people to read your content, then you have to make it pleasing on the eyes.

There are many different opinions about the optimum typography for websites but there are a couple of rules to follow to make sure your ministries website or blog is displayed for optimum viewing.

Font Size

Like I said earlier, size matters, and no where does it matter more than in your choice of font size.  Most people have a tendency to get their font size too small.  I think it is because we are used to typing word documents in 10 or 12 size font.  These sizes are much too small for the internet.

In fact on your computer screen a font size of 16 most closely mirrors what we are used to reading in a book.  Make your font too small and your readers will flee to find something easier to read, too big and they won’t stick around long either.  No matter how good your content is, if your font is difficult to read most readers won’t spend the time to suffer through it. What makes a blog a success?  Is it the number of unique visitors, the number of subscribers, or perhaps the amount of followers you have on Twitter?  This might be the case if you have a blog for the sole purpose of earning an income.  If that is the case, then I would suggest that you stop reading and go spend your time increasing your readership.  Of course, you can always leave a comment so someone from here might click on your name and go to your blog.

However, if you are like me and this is not a money making proposition then I would like to suggest to you that your visitors or subscribers have nothing to do your blog being a success.

In my Sunday School class I have been teaching using the book “Subversive Kingdom” by Ed Stetzer and the accompanying videos.  You may remember from an earlier article of mine that this series examines the Kingdom of God from the perspective of the parables of Jesus in Matthew.  One of the parables that we have been studying is the Parable of the Mustard Seed.  I know this is familiar to many of you but let me refresh your memory. If your ministry has an online blogging presence that is separate from your church website, you can now use this avenue to drive more traffic to your church site.  The new tools from eBible.com make this simple and easy to do.  By utilizing eBible’s online Bible on your church website and the Verselink tool on your blog or other website you can have your readers directed to your church website whenever they click on a link for a Scripture reference.  Once the reader has been directed to your church page it is up to you to provide them the information that will entice them to attend your services.
