Archives For God

I am in the process of reading Max Lucado’s book, Just Like Jesus. (Review coming next week.) In this book, Lucado quotes a verse of that I wanted to share with you today.

The Lord your God is with you; the mighty One will save you. He will rejoice over you. You will rest in his love, he will sing and be joyful about you. Zeph 3:17

I am sure that this verse is familiar to most of you. However, what made this verse stand out in my mind today was not that this was the first time I have heard this. No, I have read this verse before and it was one that was familiar to me. But today, I read it differently.

Several years ago, I was thumbing through a recent issue of Guidepost magazine and I came across a short story that has stuck with me for quite some time now. This story made its way into my Sunday School lesson that week with unexpected results, but that is a tale for a different time.

The story that was told was about a woman who lived in Alaska. During the long cold winters her husband was away most of the time at work. So in order to pass the time, she decided that it was time to do some spring cleaning. After all the short day was bright and sunny, even though the temperature outside the door was a chilly 40 degrees below zero.

After washing one of the windows in the living room and letting the sunshine in, she noticed a common house fly in the house. This fly was energized by the sunshine outside and flew into the window. After gathering itself back up, the fly decided that it was time for another attempt and it proceeded to fly straight into the window once again. After watching several attempts of the fly’s escape fail, she realized that the fly was seeing the beautiful sunshine outside of the house and wanted to get out. This small creature was determined to get out to the bright warm sun and escape the confines of the house.

Even Though, You Love Me

February 14, 2013 — 2 Comments

Even though, I don’t always listen, You love me.

Even though, I sometimes turn away, You love me.

Even though, I continue to make the same mistakes, You love me.

Even though, I want to do things my way, You love me.

Even though, I sometimes act like I don’t know you, You love me.

Even though, I I fail, You love me.

Even though, I am a sinner, You love me.

Even though, I was lost, You love me.

And even though, I don’t always show it,

I love You too.

I hope each of you have a wonderful Valentine’s Day and don’t forget to let God know that you love Him today.

What’s In A Name

January 22, 2013 — 3 Comments

Hi, my name is Sele. (pronounced Sell) And I am in the business of selling cars for a living. I actually work as a Sales Manager at an automobile dealership. Whenever I go out to meet one of our customers, I am usually greeted with confused looks. These looks are always followed by “what did you say your name was?” After repeating myself, I am usually asked about the origins of the name to which I always reply: “I’m a junior, I got it from my Dad.” I have been told numerous times that my parents must have known that I would be selling stuff for a living. I generally respond that they probably just guessed I would since I liked to talk a lot as a child.

Today, however, upon meeting a customer for the first time and repeating my name, the customer looked me in the eye and said, “If you name is “sell”, then you can call me “buy.” I laughed and told him that it was nice to meet him and I loved to meet customers who referred to themselves as “buy,” as long as they bought from me.

If I were born in the middle ages, my last name would have probably been Seller. During these times it was common for someones last name to be a reflection of the trade or craft that one did to earn a living. If your last name was Miller, then you probably ground flour from gain. A Wainwright would have been a wagon builder or Taylor would have made or repaired clothing for a living. Even the name Outlaw reflected that the person in question was of questionable character. However not all family names could have been deciphered so easily. You would think that Banker would have been someone who loaned money for a living. However, that would not be the case, generally that person was one that lived on a hillside.

Without God

November 19, 2012 — 3 Comments

This past weekend I was listening to The Message on Sirius XM while driving. During one of the breaks between songs, one of the artists, I really don’t remember who it was, described the depths of despair which he found himself before he found God. This got me to thinking about how I found God.

I don’t have a great story of conversion, I do remember well the day that I accepted Jesus Christ as my savior, but I wasn’t on the precipice of hell when it happened. I was a young teenager and accepted Jesus one night during revival at our small country church.

You see, for as long as I can remember, God has been in my life. Sure there have been times when I didn’t act like I wanted Him in my life, but He never left.

As far back as I can remember, God has been a part of my life. I attended Sunday school and church as a small child, remember the Whuppin Bush, and continued to attend until I left to go to college. I have always known that God was with me and that we were in this together.
