Carol Of The Bells

December 19, 2012 — 3 Comments

Christmas carols have been around for hundreds of years. In fact, the oldest known Christmas carol originated in Rome in the fourth century. One of the trends in Christmas music today is to take these Christmas carols that we grew up knowing and giving them a modern twist. Sometimes these attempts do not quite turn out to be an improvement. However, if the artists have their heart in the right place and understand the meaning of these carols, then the result can be quite enjoyable.

One of these groups that have put their own stamp on some classic carols is Our Hearts Hero. If you have read this blog on a regular basis then you have undoubtedly heard me mention this Christian band before. Last year, Our Hearts Hero released a Christmas album titled “Love Is Breathing.” You can find my original review of the album here.

This song contains some great Christmas music but my favorite has to be their rendition of Carol of the Bells. Their rock version of this Christmas classic really shows the talent that this group has. If you don’t like rock music, you probably will not appreciate their interpretation of the song, but hopefully some of you will find this music to your liking. You can check out Our Hearts Hero version of Carol of the Bells by watching the video below.

As I sit here in front of my computer on Sunday afternoon staring at the blank screen, wondering what I am going to write, I decide to plug in my headphones and listen to a little music on iTunes.  Outside the skies are darkening, the wind is blowing and a storm is on the way.  Above the sound of the thunder and wind I hear the following words.

Beautiful, is the name of all names.
Merciful, to the weak and ashamed.
Grace will fall like rain,
On the broken and afraid.
And love will set them free.

Worthy, worthy, worthy,
is the lamb that was slain.
Holy, Holy, Holy
is the everlasting name.
Forever and forevermore shall reign,
Holy.

As I listened to the words of the song, the storm grew in intensity outside of the house.  But I kept hearing these words echo in my mind.  ”Worthy, worthy, worthy is the lamb that was slain.  Holy, Holy, Holy is the everlasting name.”   Continue Reading…

I first heard of Our Hearts Hero last year when they were giving away their Christmas album.  I’m not a big fan of Christmas albums but I fell in love with the unique sound of this album.  (You can read that original review here.)  So I was intrigued when Our Hearts Hero announced that they were releasing a new album.  We featured the video from the title cut “Shine On” here a couple of weeks ago and as soon as the album was released this past week I purchased it.

I must admit that even though I really liked the Christmas album, I wasn’t expecting to be overwhelmed by this sophomore release from the band.  I figured that I was probably getting a little too old to appreciate their sound and I purchased the album mainly because I enjoyed their Christmas album which I did not have to pay for, so I thought that this would be a good way to support the band in their ministry.  I was wrong.  I am blown away by this album.

“Shine On” is full of surprises,  I was expecting the classical sound blended with a modern edge that I found on the Christmas album but was afraid that everything would sound too electric or too new wave for my taste.  I was wrong.  There is a great blend of electric, acoustic, and classic sounds that just works.  Each song is a new experience and the music is fresh, never sounding old or tired.  Too many bands these days get in a musical rut and all of their music ends up sounding the same.  This is not the case with Our Hearts Hero.
